9-27th September 2024 – BAS Field Project: Blounts Court

BAS will be undertaking a further season of excavations at this multi-period site in Sonning Common.

The Society is excavating three trenches at Blounts Court starting on Monday 9th September 2024 and ending on Friday 27thSeptember 2024.

Work will take place from 09:30 to 16:00 on weekdays only (weather permitting).

Blounts Court is an interesting site.  As explained in the June 2024 newsletter,  we have identified 5 phases of use of the site from Roman to modern times.

This year, in the three trenches, we will be investigating:

  • The relationship between the medieval flint faced wall and phase 1 of Blounts Court house that was built in 1431.
  • The relationship between the medieval flint faced wall and the Roman wall
  • A series of anomalies to the east of the house which may represent the remains of medieval or Tudor buildings

Working on an excavation offers opportunities to excavate in a trench, record plans and sections of an excavation in photographs and drawings and processing finds.

All members, whether experienced or not, are welcome not take part. If you can spare a few days to come and work on site please send Andrew Hutt or Nigel Spencer an email with the dates when you are available.
