P. Bushe-Fox carried out excavations at Richborough. He produced a number of reports, while the artefacts found on site were left in museum stores. Bushe-Fox concluded that over time Richborough was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An invasion and supply base AD 43-44<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A port town AD70s \u2013 3rd century<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A triple ditch fortlet \u2013 3rd century<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A shore fort \u2013 Late 3rd \u2013 5th century<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil reviewed evidence from features on the site which included timber stores, pits, wells, workers cottages. masonry buildings and their cellars and artefacts including: pottery, coins and inscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this evidence Phil concluded that Richborough was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The site of the invasion landing AD 43<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possible military site AD 43-70s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imperial supply port AD 70s \u2013 150s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Port town with new arch \u2013 AD 150s \u2013 3rdcentury<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains to be seen if and how Phil\u2019s new interpretations find their way into the Kent Historic Environment Record and the notice boards explaining the site to visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"0\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Phil Smither, Portable Antiquities Scheme, Berkshire A lecture given to the Society on 21st\u00a0September 2024 In the 1920s, J.
