In contrast to the rest of this week the weather on the hilltop at Wickham were the excavation is located was rathe chilly! However, no sooner had work got underway than Peter C discovered a Romano-British copper-alloy brooch in context within the dark organic deposits in Trench 2A from which a 40L bulk sample had been taken the previous day for post-ex analysis in the floatation tank. On being cleaned and compared to the diagnostic text books of brooch typology it is likely that this brooch is a Colchester Derivative brooch type of the Late-Flavian period (AD80-AD100). If confirmed this gives a date range for the bulk sample of organic deposit where the brooch was found.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the other end of Trench 2 the large deposits of flints were removed by Lindsey, Susanne, Martin and Debbie revealing a new series of contexts that were cleaned and recorded. These contexts will be explored further during next week. In Trench 2C the contexts revealed the  day before were planned and recorded by Katharine, Zoe and Carrollanne before excavation continued.<\/p>\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in Trench 3 work continued by Tony, Paul and James C where two further contexts were revealed. These will be cleaned and recorded next week.<\/p>\n\n\n
