Wednesday 11th March 2026 2:30pm – BAS Study Group

The agenda for this meeting is:

We have all been looking at the 2025 stratigraphic analysis over the past few weeks for the follow areas of the Wickham House site:

  • Trench 1a/1b industrial areas and lane
  • Trench 2/medieval manor
  • Trench 4a/b/c Roman period building and Roman road
  • Trench 4d/4e stone building with portico/lean-to
  • Geophys anomalies we haven’t excavated yet

Andrew has asked me to present a plan for the 2026 excavation. Whilst I know that your analyses are all still very much “work in progress” (as is my own stratigraphic analysis), to get the best out the 2026 excavation I think it would be good to have a 5min update for each area that covers the following:

  • Interim interpretations of the 2025 results for each area
  • Questions that need to be resolved during the 2026 excavation for each area
  • Features you would like to dig in 2026 and why

In the second half of the meeting I will present a broadbrush summary of where we I think we are with our site from my own interpretation analysis,  more ideas of questions to be resolved and areas to dig this season etc etc. Having done this we will have a short discussion on the pros/cons of each. Ultimately as project leader I will need to decide on the plan – and as ever I am sure that once we start digging the plan will quickly evolve… however, I feel that discussing as a group up front and pooling our ideas is the best place to start from.

Tuesday 10th March 2026 7:30pm – BAS Finds Group

The agenda for this meeting is:

A presentation and discussion on finds and context dating: this will explain how to use type hierarchies to characterise finds and the frequency distribution algorithm that Keith and Martin have been working on

Demonstration of the Anchurus II release 2 system.  Tony has just released this for system testing and it represents a significant milestone in the Society’s development- an IT system that we can all use to record and interpret an excavation.  I am sure you will want to see what it looks like

Please note that the meeting fee is £3 per head
